Bread Givers is a story set in the adulterate East Side of New York, during the 1910s of a family named Smolinsky. It is an honest autobiography of Anzia Yezierska, the author of this book. Anzia Yezierska was born in a shtetl, in Plotsk in Russian Poland and immigrated to the United States in the 1890s. She was born in a very poor family headed by her father, a Talmudic scholar. She grew up in the Jewish ghetto. Likewise, the Smolinsky family was a very poor Jewish orthodox family, who had immigrated to the United States from Poland.
